Kyoukai No Kanata
Hello, Welcome back to Cup of Tea.
This is another review by me, The Tart Pastry.
Now I have to admit, I've had a rough couple of days, and they don't look like they'll be getting any easier, so if my usual mood is much more somber as I review please forgive me. I will be ok, but it will take a lot of time.
But onto our review for this time, Kyoukai No Kanata, which I must say first hand is a beautifully animated series and was tragically only 12 episodes. If you can manage, watch it with the best quality as possible so the magic isn't lost on you.
I mean look at this:
It never ceases to please me over how much anime has advanced over the past couple of years and how wonderful things have gotten with detail and fluidity. So if you're looking for animated pornography of the artsy kind, that is one of the reasons I recommend this anime.
But plot wise, a quick synopsis is that the main girl here, Mirai Kuriyama, is the last of her clan. One that has been condemned and looked down upon because of their unnatural ability to use their blood as a weapon. (As you see up there in that gawgeous gif, she's using a sword, but that's right folks it's made out of her blood. There are a few other attributes to it that make it that much more ridiculous/badass). Her family and many others come from a long line of demon hunters who come around and destroy demons that come lurking out in daylight. Luckily only those with supernatural abilities seem to be the only ones who can actually see them and any sort of supernatural tricks that may go on.
She meets Akihito Kanbara, a high school student with a very unhealthy fetish for glasses. And I am not kidding, put glasses on a pretty lady and suddenly he is mighty interested. It becomes a fallback joke throughout the 12 episodes which I've come to enjoy immensely and find slightly adorable if it weren't so creepy. But you actually find out that Akihito isn't your average high school pervert, but rather he's an immortal kid that's half demon. The two meet because Mirai tries to kill him as practice for when she goes out demon hunting. They eventually come to a steady acquaintanceship that branches out between Akihito's friends Hiroomi and Mitsuki, another two demon hunters from a more prestigious line of hunters.
In truth, the way they produced the anime makes it a bit difficult to pinpoint a basic plot because it all ties together by the very end and they sort of keep you guessing heavily so you can continue watching. It is a tactic that is very risky because you can either hook the audience or lose them. In this case, I was one of the ones that was hooked!
Animation and plot aside, I think they handled the romance in here exceptionally well, mainly because they didn't throw it in your face and it was a gradual development that left your heart melting to the very last minute of the episode. I personally fell in love with the main two and their dynamic, and the emotions you feel as you watch are very real and believable despite the obvious unreal elements to it.
No anime is without it's tropes, but in this case I found them highly amusing because of how the execute them throughout.
This anime made me laugh, gasp, scream, squeal, and even tear up the last episode. Mind you, I didn't let them fall because I . . .AM A MAN. Not really, but in all seriousness I did definitely tear up last episode, and it took all of my willpower not to let them shed as my emotions were stretched to the limit.
One of the few things I didn't like was that seeing as how there were only 12 episodes, you could tell towards the end that they were trying to cram it all in there before it was finished, so it definitely leaves you with unanswered questions every here and there, but do not let that deter you from something beautiful and very entertaining.
Thanks so much for reading! If you have the time I certainly recommend hopping beyond the boundary and getting yourself to watch!
Until next time. :)
P.S.
If you've all seen anything from this that looks slightly like a k-pop fan service vid, let me confirm that yes, yes it is real and yes it happens within the anime.
They give you an explanation in the episode why they do this, and this one was sort of a filler but it was hilarious so don't let this turn you off, wahahahaha.
Bye!
